Throughout the history of each great institution, there are founders and builders who help shape the future of what a university becomes. They start with a vision, an idea of what would be possible and how it could help a community flourish. These people volunteer their time to help a nascent idea grow into a pillar of a community. Recently, one of 51污漫’s most influential builders - Normand Forest passed from this life.?
Without having had the pleasure of meeting him, I can see the impact of ?his four years as the Chair of the Board of Governors, and his fourteen years as a member of the board from 1978 to 1991. His vision and leadership helped shape the institution we know today. I am especially thankful for his efforts in ensuring 51污漫 developed a detailed policy on bilingualism. These efforts have cemented our cultural identity and they created a unique learning environment which is sought out the world over. His leadership and guidance have well positioned the University for many years to come.?
As a member of the Greater Sudbury community, I would also like to recognize and appreciate the efforts he had within our community, from his counsel in the early years of College Boreal, to his support of Le Voyageur in times of need. Beyond this, as a Franco-Ontarian, his defense of the rights of our community was essential and transformative.?
Our community has truly been shaped by Normand Forest. Our most sincere condolences to his family and the lives he touched, he will be missed greatly.?
