Personal Preparedness

Emergency Prepardness Week happens in May of each year. This is a national awareness initiative that has taken place annually since 1996. It is a collaborative event undertaken by provincial and territorial emergency management organizations supporting activities at the local level, in concert with Public Safety Canada and partners.

Would you be able to be self-sufficient for a minimum of 72-hours while emergency workers care for critically injured individuals? Emergencies can occur at any time, and being prepared is the best strategy to quickly provide peace of mind and to begin focusing on recovery. For more information, check out the Emergency preparedness guide.

Follow these three steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies:

The first step to getting prepared for an emergency is to understand which hazards you need to plan for.

Create an emergancy plan for you and your family so you will know how to respond to a disaster. Knowing what to do will reduce anxiety and help keep you focused and safe.

Make sure you are ready when a disaster strikes by having an emergency kit on hand. You can buy these from a number of retailers or create your own by using this checklist to help you make a kit that will work for your family (and pet) situation.‌
