Employers have legal responsibilities to ensure the health and safety of workers and provide them with the information, instruction, and training necessary for their positions. This class reviews the responsibilities of employers and examines legal accountability arising from the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Prerequisite: In order to qualify for this practicum you must have successfully completed all previous coursework or be enrolled in the remainder of required courses.

Complete an 80-hour supervised field-based placement to refine, integrate, and apply the knowledge you have acquired in the Records Management certificate program. Continuing Education will find host sites that will provide training and support so that students are able to utilize their new skills in a safe environment. Practicum is required for program completion. The first week consists of an online Employment Skills workshop. The remaining two weeks are off-site with a host company.

Bookkeeping Practicum

Cost: $826.00
Prerequisite: Completion of the Bookkeeping for Small Business certificate.

Participate in a two-week work practicum with a local employer to apply what you have learned in class and gain experience. To qualify, you must have successfully completed all previous coursework and grade requirements. Transportation to the practicum site is your responsibility and may require travel outside your area of residence.

Practicum is not a requirement for certificate completion.

Computerized Accounting Level I (Sage 50)

Cost: $624.00
Prerequisite: Bookkeeping Level II with B or better.

Integrated bookkeeping/accounting software is a standard for small businesses. This course covers journal entries, purchases/sales orders and quotes, as well as invoicing, receipts and payments for payables, receivables, and inventory. Familiarize yourself with the reporting and tax features provided by accounting software. Payroll is not covered.

Students should be competent in computer skills before taking this course.

Evidence-Based Decision Making

Examine the importance of evidence-based decision making and its role within both public and private sector organizations. Explore the fundamental approaches to evidence-based decision making through case studies and literature from various professional disciplines.

Learn the components of an evidence-based methodology, including:

  • Where and how critical thinking skills fit in

Excel Level I

Learn how to use MS Excel to create spreadsheets that include AutoSum, conditional formatting, formulas, and absolute addresses. Develop or edit spreadsheets using a variety of MS Excel attributes and fine-tune your new skills by creating charts. This course is designed for people with prior Excel experience. We encourage students with no such experience to take Excel Basics for the Office.

Students with credit for ABT 137 or RM 06 Spreadsheets: Excel will receive credit for this course provided software version is the same.

Learn to manage a payroll accounting system, with an emphasis on the calculation of earnings and deductions to conform to federal and provincial laws and accounting best practices. Find out how to complete forms required by law and the necessary accounting entries performed as part of basic payroll recordkeeping. This is a general course that is not specific to any one business.

Project Management

Project management is a fundamental skill in today's workplace. Learn the basics of good project management, planning considerations, and how to create reasonable, manageable project objectives. Explore ways of keeping your project on track. Learn how to manage information using Microsoft Project and develop Gantt charts, employee calendars, progress reports, and schedules.
